  1. just read your "Connections, Followers and Friends" post. - excellent opinions and guidance.

i've been meaning to ask you your opinion about friending strictly professional contacts on facebook vs casual/friends type contacts. sometimes i have some reservations about adding professional contacts to my mostly personal facebook. perhaps you can expand on this in your seminar. you know, i have some customers that i do not want to know that i'm human, but some i think are curious about "who" they are dealing with and see facebook as means to dig deeper.

with respect to "defacing" and "refacing" i worry that if i only "Linkin" (nice, huh?) professional contacts that request to be "faced" (or is it "facebooked"?) then they might be offended. what should we do Dr. Cuthbert?

  2. Hey Tim, errr, I mean... confused,

Thanks for the note. For me, customers and those I only know through work are part of my LinkedIn world. If they want to learn more about me they can do that on my blog or website. Facebook seems to be the place I reserve for actual "friends" to connect with me. By screening who I allow to be a Facebook friend, I can be transparent. With LinkedIn, I can still be who I am but in a more guarded environment, if that makes sense.

When someone requests to be a Facebook friend, who I think would be more appropriate as a LinkedIn connection, I just ignore the request and then immediately go to LinkedIn and invite them to connect. I haven't had a problem with this so far, maybe others have thoughts one way or the other.

Remember my motto, the best way to avoid having to "deface" is to do a good job of the "preface" :)

    Happy connecting!

    Tom
